Vermifiltration
About 2 billion people around the world do not have access to sanitation and 1.7 billion people live under water-stressed conditions. We've built the most eco-friendly, affordable solution with our Tiger Biofilter technology, eliminating 99% of fecal pathogens and creating reusable non-potable water, all powered by vermifiltration. The technology uses a species of earthworms (known as Tiger Worms) with a natural filtration process to effectively treat fecal and sewage waste.
The tiger worm (Eisenia fetida) is an earthworm species long known for digesting organic material.
These worms thrive in moist soil, rotting vegetation, manure and fecal waste, consuming pathogens and converting the waste into gas and compost.
Local subspecies are found in most parts of the world especially in tropical climates.
Worm ecosystem are self-regulating. Population increases and decreases based on available resources.

Vermifiltration compared to sewage treatment alternatives

Tiger Biofilter compares extremely favorably to other Individual Waste Treatment Systems.
Tiger Biofilter technology
The Tiger Biofilter has been specifically designed for the Hawaiian environment. An all fiberglass construction handles island temperature and humidity conditions. A large planter of native Hawaiian plants finishes water treatment, shelters the habitat and provides a pleasing garden.
TBF Solutions offers the most effective treatment solution to sewage. We bio-mimic the natural treatment process using worms and natural filtration materials to treat sewage and fecal waste rapidly, efficiently, and economically.

At the core of water treatment is the Tiger Biofilter technology. The natural filtration bio-media provides a bedding for waste consuming micro-organisms and composting earthworms. The worm action promotes passive aeration, dissolving oxygen into the wastewater. The main advantage over competing technologies (including Aerobic Treatment Units) is that the TBF has macro-organisms (worms) in addition to the micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi) found in other sanitation technologies. This results in thorough breakdown of solid waste in hours instead of weeks or months in other methods.

Clean water for Hawaii
Hawaii has a massive sewage problem the world has never heard of. Nearly 90,000 homes still discharge their waste—collectively over 50 million gallons daily—directly into holes in the ground (known as cesspools). These cesspools threaten the quality of Hawaii's waters and the public health of all Hawaiians.
All cesspools in Hawaii are now required to be upgraded to wastewater treatment systems by 2050. The Tiger Biofilter vermifiltration system is the most affordable and effective solution to meeting this need.
In partnership with the Hawaii Department of Health and with independent testing by the University of Hawaii, TBF Solutions is launching an ambitious initiative to put the Tiger Biofilter in place to solve the state’s sewage and water pollution problems.
